Evolution of #Videogame cheats: From Konami codes to the latest mods
Sometimes you hit a wall. You may be the undisputed champion of the leaderboard and can level in your dreams, but certain Titles leave you stranded. Maybe the design is just broken. Maybe the spike in difficulty feels intentional. Whatever the reason, you’ve reached breaking point. What is the only way to clear the game? You have to cheat.
Cheating is not a new phenomenon. It is almost as old as the media itself. The heart of a video game is just a few lines of code. If you know what you’re doing and have the right tools, you can add a few lines of logic and turn an impossible boss fight into a trivial ramble. However, it is difficult to change the code while maintaining the game’s stability. Most players don’t have the coding skills to fix the game without breaking it.
It is important to remember that not all cheating is about power. Some cheats actually make the game “harder”. It can create more powerful enemies or reduce your character’s health. Some give you strange abilities not found in the base game, such as the ability to fly or pass through solid walls. And also beauty tips. These do not change the mechanism at all. They just make the game world look ridiculous. It’s often very funny. Usually harmless.
There are many ways to cheat in video games. Not all methods work on all platforms. Cheating on consoles is completely different than cheating on PC. Online gaming adds a whole new level of complexity and moral dilemmas. When you cheat in singleplayer, it only affects your own experience. Your self-esteem may suffer or you may feel a strange sense of accomplishment. But what about online cheating? This also affects others. Most online communities hate cheaters. They saw it as a violation of the social contract.
There is a heavy bias in the word 「浮気」. It brings to mind the image of a player with no effort. However, this is not always true.
Some studios bake cheat codes directly into the final build. It is not just for fun. It simplifies the quality assurance phase. This stage is also called game testing. Testers play through the game to find glitches. They check if the code holds up.
A long game with many levels needs shortcuts. Imagine a fantasy RPG. Characters can use dozens of weapons. Walking to find every item takes hours. Built-in shortcuts let testers grab them instantly. These codes sometimes stay in the shipped product.
Other devs add cheats to keep players engaged. No one wants to quit out of frustration. Cheat codes help those who struggle with mechanics. They let you finish the game. They also boost replay value. You play normally once. Then you use the code to become an unstoppable force. Some include them because players expect them. Modern gamers look for them.
Finding the Secrets
Players find these codes by chance. Or through word of mouth. Some hack the code themselves. Others wait for sites like GameFAQs or IGN to post them. A quick search usually reveals if cheats exist for your game.
Entry methods vary. Some games have a dedicated input screen. Others require pausing and pressing a button sequence. You might need a few tries. Once you get the rhythm, your character becomes invincible.
Using Third-Party Hacks
Not all games support internal cheats. Some require external tools. Programmers can tweak the source code. But most users rely on hackers. These tools are often called trainers.
Trainers change the game. They make characters stronger. Or they alter the game world. You might run a separate app alongside the game. Some modify the code permanently. Loading the game then loads the hack too.
Many sites host these trainers. Be careful. Some hacks are viruses. Read user comments. Check reviews. Look for the trainer in multiple locations. This helps filter out malicious software. Even legitimate hacks can freeze your game. Or make it unplayable.
Console Limitations
Console hacking is harder. Consoles are closed systems. They use proprietary media. A hacker must work hard to bypass these limits. Doing it correctly takes skill. You often void the warranty. The process is risky. And still not guaranteed.
Console hardware cheat
Console gaming is a closed ecosystem. Unlike computer games where there are many coaches, breaking the rules on consoles often requires physical intervention. You can’t just download a patch and start exploiting the code. Cartridge-based systems are notoriously difficult to crack because developers write games directly into read-only memory (ROM). Modifying this code requires specialized hardware and deep programming knowledge.
Enter the Game Genie.
Codemasters designed these devices to avoid the need for physical hacking. Installation is easy. Plug the game cartridge into the Game Genie and then into your device’s console. Acts as an intermediary. When you start the game, enter a specific code. This device intercepts the data stream between the cartridge and the console and dynamically alters the data to trigger cheat functions.
The beauty of this approach? It leaves the original cartridge intact. It does not mean rewriting the ROM. Just provide a modified version of the same data to the console. No corrupted saves. No bricked games. You get instant invincibility or extra lives.
Disc-based consoles work differently. These systems do not use ROM cartridges. Instead, players place a “cheat disc” first. The disk loads a small script into system memory. Once the code is activated, you can remove the cheat disc and insert the actual game. Some older systems also require a memory stick to store these cheat settings. This is a solution for systems that refuse to modify software directly.
The Shift to Online Cheating
Hardware cheats like Game Genie and the popular GameShark dominated the cartridge era. These are single player tools. You’re fooling a machine, not a human. Most people don’t mind ruining the fun. Don’t hurt others.
The Internet has changed everything.
Online games have human opponents. Cheating is not a harmless solitary activity. This violates the social contract. How do you cheat when everyone is connected?
Auto-Aim is the most common answer. In first-person shooters, hitting a moving target is hard. The automatic target hack locks the target in the opponent’s hit range. You might miss shots entirely on your own. With the hack, you become a marksman. It’s not skill. This is automation.
Then there are macros.
Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) often require grinding. Kill the same monster hundreds of times to level up. It’s boring. Experienced players create scripts (macros) to automate these repetitive commands. When the player goes to buy coffee, the game goes through a routine. Developers design these games for organic growth. Automation breaks that design.
Some players don’t even want to grind. They pay others to level up their characters. This is called “power leveling” or “account sharing”. Others play the game normally, boosting stats and acquiring equipment. When the character becomes powerful, the original owner regains control. It completely skips the expected progression curve.
The Economy of Cheating
Virtual items have real value. Many online games have an in-game economy where players can trade weapons, armor and currency. Some players take it outside of the game client.
Sites like eBay host auctions of virtual goods. Players sell high-level items and rare currencies for real money. This practice has declined since the early days of MMORPGs, but it has not disappeared. This is still a gray market. And it still violates the terms of service of most major games.
The Consequences
when you spam cheats,它不会感到沮丧。

Reading list
The ideas in this piece did not come out of nowhere. These are based on academic and journalistic debate.
Andrea Adelson’s 1989 New York Times article “Cheating Is Just Part of the Game” set an early tone. It’s old, the sentiment lingers. There is also Mia Consalvo’s book Cheating published by MIT Press in 2007. She explores ethics more deeply than the average observer.
Ed Halter wrote: “No Fair!” for Games for Windows in 2007. Luke O’Brien went to the trouble for Slate in 2007 “Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, B, A.” Both explore the line between strategy and deception.
From an academic perspective, K.K. Kimppa and A. K. Bisset published “The Ethical Significance of Cheating in Online Computer Games” in the International Review of Information Ethics. It’s dense, but important. GameFAQs also serves as a large, uncurated repository of information on player behavior, code sharing, and community norms. Less theory, more practice.
Why It Matters
它们证明作弊isn’t a new glitch。 But a feature。
Is it cheating if the game doesn’t punish it?
