You know the name. You know the phone. That’s it.

It is easy to treat Alexander Graham Bell as a one-trick pony. A man who got lucky with a wire and a diaphragm in 1876 and then retired into obscurity. But that view is lazy. It ignores the actual breadth of his curiosity. Bell was not just an inventor. He was a tinkerer obsessed with sound and flight.

His list of patents reads like a science fiction catalog from the 19th century.

The Sound That Didn’t Need a Wire

Most people forget the photophone.

Bell invented it in 1880. It predates radio. It predates fiber optics. The device transmitted sound on a beam of light. It was the first time anyone successfully sent voice without a physical conductor. Bell called it his greatest invention. The world called it a curiosity. It didn’t catch on immediately because air is messy. Dust, clouds, and weather killed the signal.

But the principle held. We use it today in lasers and data cables. We just don’t credit the guy who figured it out first.

He also messed with recording technology. The Graphophone arrived in 1886. It wasn’t the Edison phonograph. It used wax cylinders and a different cutting mechanism. It was cheaper. It was louder. The Bullet That Saved No One

Then there is the dark chapter. The medical tech.

In July 1881, President James A. Garfield was shot. Two bullets entered his body. Doctors had no idea where they were. They poked and probed. They made it worse. Infection set in. Garfield died.

Bell couldn’t let it go. He teamed up with Simon Newcomb, a mathematician from the U.S. Nautical Almanac Office. They built an electrical bullet probe. It worked like a primitive metal detector. You send current through the body. The resistance changes depending on what the needle hits. Metal has low resistance. Flesh has high resistance. The device amplified the difference.

They demonstrated it in the autumn of 1881. It would have found the bullets.

It didn’t matter. Garfield was already dead by then. The probe saved no one. It just proved that technology could see inside a human body without cutting them open. That concept drives MRI scans and CT machines today. We owe the idea of non-invasive imaging to a failed attempt to save a president.

From Sound to Sky

After the tragedy, Bell looked up.

He stopped thinking about wires. He started thinking about lift.

In 1907, he founded the Aerial Experiment Association (AEA). This was his entry into aviation. He wasn’t building Wright Flyer replicas. He was experimenting with different wing designs, rudders, and control surfaces. The group included gliders that used water rudders. They flew across Bras d’Or Lake in Nova Scotia.
