Your default Facebook settings might be exposing more than you realize. By default, anyone who stumbles onto your profile can see who you know. If that makes you uncomfortable, you are not alone. It is surprisingly easy to change this. You just need to know where to look.

Why Hiding Your Friends List Matters

It seems harmless at first glance. You are friends with people. So what? The problem is that this list is essentially a map of your social network. Cyber criminals know this. They scan public friends lists to build profiles. They take your photo and your connections to create fake accounts. Then they reach out to your friends. They ask for money. They ask for personal info. It is a simple social engineering trap.

Beyond fraud, there is harassment. If you have a dispute with someone, hiding your list limits their access to your broader circle. It adds friction to their stalking. It also just satisfies a basic desire for privacy. You do not owe the internet transparency into your social circle.

Hiding Your Friends List on Desktop

The process on a computer is straightforward. You do not need to dig through old menus.

  1. Log in to Facebook via your browser.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top right corner.
  3. Select Settings and Privacy, then click Settings.
  4. Look for the Audience and Visibility section.
  5. Click on How people find and contact you.
  6. Find Who can see your friends list.
  7. Click the dropdown next to it. It likely says Public.

Change that setting to Only me. Click Done.

Now, only you can see the list. You can also choose to show it to Friends or Friends of Friends if you want a middle ground. Or you can create a custom list. But Only me is the safest bet for total concealment.

Hiding Your Friends List on Mobile

The app works similarly. The menu location shifts slightly between iOS and Android, but the logic is identical.

  1. Open the Facebook app.
  2. Tap the menu icon. On Android, this is the three horizontal lines in the top right. On iOS, it is the three lines in the bottom right.
  3. Tap Settings and Privacy.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Scroll to Audience and Visibility.
  6. Tap How people find and contact you.
  7. Tap Who can see your friends list.
  8. Select Only me or your preferred option.

The interface is clean. You are done in seconds.

Other Privacy Controls

Changing your friends list visibility is just one layer. You might also want to check your posts. Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Privacy. Under Your Activity, change Who can see your future posts to Friends. You can also click Limit Past Posts to restrict old content.

For photos, it is trickier. Your current profile pic stays public. To hide old albums, go to Photos > Albums. Select an album, click the three dots, choose Edit Album, and change the setting to Only me. You cannot do this in bulk for all photos currently. It has to be manual.

For a fully private account on mobile, navigate to Menu > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Privacy Settings. Tweak every option to the strictest setting available.

“Keeping your Facebook friends list private enhances the security of your social media presence by reducing the data available to potential attackers.”

There is no perfect shield. But controlling who sees your network is a solid first step. The internet changes fast. Your settings don’t have to.
