The servers are down. Again.

Microsoft’s Xbox ecosystem is currently buckling under a major service disruption. It isn’t just a minor hiccup. The entire online infrastructure—from signing in to actually playing a game—is broken.

VGC confirmed the news early, but the reality hit players hard and fast. As of this afternoon, the official Xbox status page is flashing red. Four specific services have been flagged with “major outage” conditions. They are Account & Profile, Games & Gaming, the Store & Subscriptions portal, and Apps & Mobile.

Why Xbox is down and what’s happening

If you’re trying to get into your account, you’re out of luck. The Account & Profile warning is blunt: users might not be able to sign in at all. Or, worse, they might get disconnected in the middle of a session. This effectively locks players out of most games, apps, and any social feature that requires a login.

It’s not just the login screen, either. The Store & Subscriptions status notes that some games are simply not appearing in the store. The Apps & Mobile status is flagging launch failures. You have the console, you have the disc (or digital copy), and you have the desire to play. But the machine says no.

Data from outage-tracking site Downdet paints a clear picture of user frustration. The bulk of complaints aren’t about the store. They’re about launching games. That category accounts for 65% of reported problems. Gameplay issues follow at 13%, with server connection problems making up the remaining 12%.

Is Xbox fixing the issue yet?

Not fast enough.

All four services on the status page list the issue as “identified.” The fix, however, remains pending. Microsoft’s Xbox Support took to X late Sunday morning to acknowledge the chaos. Engineers were “actively working to mitigate” errors affecting sign-ins, libraries, and launches. They pointed users to the status page for real-time updates, a move that often feels like shouting into the void during a crisis.

By 2:03 PM EST, Team Xbox posted a follow-up. Their teams were focused on “multiple investigation angles.” They remained “hard at work.”

“Thanks for your patience while teams keep working,” they said.

Shortly after this article was first published, the tone shifted from vague corporate speak to genuine apology. Xbox Support posted a direct update on X, apologizing for the long wait.

“Things are slowly improving, though players worldwide may now still experience failures launching games, along with potential [sign-in] and purchase issues,” the post reads.

A bad week for gaming infrastructure

The timing feels cruel. This Xbox outage lands just one week after the PlayStation Network suffered its own multi-hour collapse. That outage began shortly after the open beta for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Fighting Souls (reported by VGC), leaving PS5 owners locked out entirely.

We are seeing a pattern of fragility in major console ecosystems. Players pay subscription fees for reliability. They expect seamless access to their digital libraries. Instead, they get error codes.

The fix is coming. The status page says so. But “slowly improving” is a polite way of saying “we’re still fixing it.” Until the green lights turn solid, the only thing players can do is wait.
