Expectant parents usually adore the soft, grainy glow of a standard ultrasound. It feels like a glimpse into a peaceful future. Fetal MRI is a different beast entirely. While it provides superior diagnostic detail for specific medical conditions, the raw visual output of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan often looks like something out of a low-budget horror film.

How fetal MRI differs from standard ultrasound imaging

MRI uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves. It does not use ionizing radiation like an X-ray, which is safe for the fetus. However, the resulting image is a stack of thin digital slices. Without specialized processing, these slices look like abstract patterns of light and shadow.
