Netflix has the dogs now. Or at least. the ones that compete at Westminster. The streamer announced during its Wednesday upfront presentation that it has landed the rights to the iconic event. A big shift. After ten years on Fox Sports. the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show is leaving linear TV behind. The 151 edition will debut live on Netflix next February. 2027.
Started in 1877. It’s been a tradition at New York City’s Madison Square Garden since then. This deal takes the three day extravaganza global. Not just for America. The whole world gets a front row seat.
“We are dedicated to growing America’s most beloved dog event.”
Dr Donald Sturz. president of the Westminster Kennel Club. says this brings the sport to new audiences. He wants to inspire fans across generations. Why change a winning formula. unless you want more eyes on the prize? The reach expands. The viewership grows.
It’s live coverage. Three days of judging and ribbon ceremonies. Streamed straight to your phone. Or your TV. Whatever device you happen to have nearby. The event remains anchored in New York. The location hasn’t shifted. Just the broadcast platform.
Will anyone actually watch live on a Tuesday evening. probably yes. The habit might change though. Rewinding that perfect trick. or skipping the interview that drags on too long. Control lies with the viewer now. Netflix bets people want that control. The club bets on visibility. Both seem okay with the result.
For now. we wait until next winter. Until then. Fox keeps the archive. Netflix takes the future. One thing is clear. The dogs are getting a bigger audience. Whether we asked for it or not. 🐕
