Amazon is once again developing a smartphone, internally dubbed “Transformer,” over a decade after its first attempt – the ill-fated Fire Phone – failed to gain traction. The new device, driven by Amazon’s Alexa AI assistant, represents a renewed push into mobile hardware as the tech giant competes with rivals in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence space.
A Second Attempt at Mobile
The project is being spearheaded by J Allard, a veteran of Microsoft’s Zune and Xbox teams, within Amazon’s ZeroOne group. Unlike the original Fire Phone, which suffered from a clunky interface and limited app availability, “Transformer” appears to be taking a more streamlined approach. The team has reportedly considered both traditional smartphone and minimalist “dumbphone” designs, drawing inspiration from devices like the $700 Light Phone, which prioritizes simplicity over app ecosystems.
AI-First Design
A key focus of the development is integrating AI capabilities directly into the device, potentially through mini-apps similar to those found in ChatGPT. This suggests Amazon may sidestep the traditional app store model that hindered the Fire Phone’s success. Instead of relying on full-fledged apps, the company might prioritize a more limited, AI-powered experience.
Lessons from the Past and Present Challenges
Amazon’s previous foray into smartphones ended abruptly after just one year due to weak sales and negative reviews. The new attempt is complicated by recent user backlash against Amazon’s AI upgrades: many complained about the LLM-powered Alexa Plus being “flooded with ads” and slower than previous versions.
Uncertain Future
Currently, there is no release date or pricing information available for “Transformer.” Whether the device will see the light of day remains uncertain, but the project signals Amazon’s determination to remain competitive in the AI-driven tech landscape. The company faces a significant challenge in convincing consumers to embrace yet another Alexa-centric device, given existing user concerns.
